The Movie

Based on the early-1990s animated MTV series, Aeon Flux stars Charlize Theron (a newly-minted Oscar winner for 2003’s Monster) as a post-apocalyptic assassin tasked with taking out the figurehead of an oppressive regime. If the frames below seem enticing, a word of warning – while cinematographer Stuart Dryburgh’s individual images are exquisite, the movie as a whole is a mess. Paramount hacked up the version favored by director Karyn Kusama, who was moving into the studio world after her well-received indie Girlfight (2000). The result is a plot that’s barely comprehensible despite an opening text intro AND voiceover exposition, awkwardly constructed action scenes, and the utter indignity of seeing the late-great character actor Pete Postlewaite wrapped up like a taquito in ridiculous future-wear.

Scene – Inside the Mind of Aeon Flux

By swallowing a pill – passed via an uncomfortably tight close-up of slithering tongues – Aeon Flux is transported into an alternate reality where she receives her mission orders from an orange-haired Frances McDormand.
