Flashback

Tomb Raider uses the following “flashback” to relay its convoluted backstory involving a tiny pyramid capable of controlling the flow of time. There’s three elements at play here:

#1. Angelina Jolie (as the titular character) silently reading a letter from her father while the camera does a 180 arc around her.

#2. Close-ups of Jolie’s father (played by Jon Voight) delivering the text of the letter directly to camera. Cross dissolves separate the Voight and Jolie shots.

#3. Flashbacks to an ancient civilization harnessing the power of the tiny pyramid.
